Eclectus parrots originate from New Guinea, northeastern Australia, and nearby islands. Adult males are predominantly green, while adult females display vivid red with blue or purple—one of the most dramatic sex-based plumage differences among parrots.

Natural history
Eclectus parrots inhabit tropical forests, where they travel between feeding areas and use strong beaks to explore fruits, seeds, flowers, and vegetation.
Their breeding biology is unusual: females may remain near valuable nest cavities while males travel to forage. This natural history can influence social, territorial, and reproductive behavior in companion birds.
